FH Hispania conducted a recent poll and found that education was the most important issue in the presidential election for Hispanics. USAToday/Gallop conducted a different poll in which 81% said education was the 3rd among ALL issues, ahead of health care, the environment, and terrorism (www.Edin08.com).
Though education has barely been mentioned by presidential candidates so far, former Colorado Gov. Roy Romer thinks that is about to change. He leads the $60 million, Bill Gates funded lobbying effort to get candidates to talk about education in this election. He noted that of the world’s 30 industrial countries, U.S. students rank 25th in math and 21 in science. Ron Paul, R-Texas, was the only candidate voicing no support for education issues, while Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill supported every education issue (www.denverpost.com). Romer travels five days a week to lobby candidates to make education in 2008 an issue.
